The 5.56x45mm cartridge is a caliber used by the Galil, FAMAS, M4A1, AUG, SG 552, SG 550, M249, Galil AR, M4A4, M4A1-S, SG 553, and the Negev in the Counter-Strike series.

While it may lack the stopping power the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge features, do not underestimate its size. The cartridge maintains good penetration and range, including the rare characteristic of having low recoil. Its flexibility means that weapons can have fairly high rate of fire without having high recoil. In multiplayer, this cartridge is used by both light machine guns, although the ammunition cannot be exchanged with rifle.

Ammunition management

  • $60 per magazine of 30 rounds.
  • The maximum amount of 5.56x45mm rounds a player can carry when using a rifle is 90 (three spare magazines for most rifles and three full magazines and a 5-round magazine for the FAMAS), costing a total of $180. The M249 can hold up to 200 rounds (two spare magazines), costing a total of $420.
  • Although it uses the same cartridge, the M249 does not share ammunition with the rifles according to the game settings and the fact that it fires from a belt.
  • Excluding Source games, in multiplayer gameplay, a good number of players use these rifles. If you are running out of ammunition, just drop your rifle and take another rifle with the same cartridge. Then, take it again and you should have more ammunition.
