Kurt Stassen is a level designer for the Counter-Strike Beta. He is the creator of Jail.

Biography[]

Kurt Stassen originally picked up level design with the real-time strategy game Warcraft II, but Duke Nukem 3D was the first first-person shooter game for which he designed levels.[1] He first got introduced to WorldCraft when he tried to design levels for Quake II and his first experience mapping for the GoldSrc engine was with Team Fortress Classic.[1]

Jail, his first Counter-Strike map, also started out as a Team Fortress Classic map but during its design Stassen felt that it would work better as a Counter-Strike map.[2] It was released as an official map with Beta 6.0 but had a quite short lifespan as it was removed when Beta 6.5 was released.

Kurt also designed several other maps, including a hostage rescue version of Jail, that he was hoping to get included officially into future releases of Counter-Strike.[3] However, none of his newer maps were ever made official. He also designed several custom maps for Counter-Strike: Source.

Stassen has also worked professionally with video games. He was employed for a few months by FIX Korea and contributed to the level design of the game Tactical Intervention.[4] In 2015, he published the indie game Spheritis on Steam.
