Jo Bieg got started in level design with Duke Nukem 3D by producing some small maps for the game. He would release his first map designed for Half-Life, Tokamak, in April 1999 and was considering giving up level design at this point due to the long amount of time it had taken him to finish the map (around six months).
He decided to pick up level design for Counter-Strike during its infancy and his first map, Nuke, was officially released as part of beta 4.0. His Counter-Strike map attracted considerably more attention than his previous Half-Life maps, which is likely why Bieg decided to focus his future level design efforts on Counter-Strike.
Jo also designed a second map, Fang, which was made part of the mod in beta 6.0. While Fang was quickly removed, Nuke would enjoy success and Valve Software eventually purchased the rights for it and made it part of the retail product in Counter-Strike 1.6.
