Overview

Otaku (de_otaku)[1] was a bomb defusal map that was featured in Counter-Strike: Condition Zero during its development.

Overview

The map took place in a Japanese nuclear reprocessing plant.[2][3] Unlike other Asian themed maps in the game, this one had a very industrial look. A video gaming journalist that previewed the map called it graphically dull looking, but thought the map made up for that in balance.[2]

Development

Otaku was designed by Christopher Auty when Gearbox Software was in charge of developing Counter-Strike: Condition Zero.[4] Chris stated that it was the most incomplete of the three maps he designed for Gearbox's version of the game,[3] hinting that it was the last map he started working on. By the time Chris stopped working on it, there were still large empty spaces in the map and the geometry was quite simple, particularly in regards to the inside areas.[3] The map also lacked good landmarks.[3]

The map made a few media appearances during the time Gearbox Software was developing Counter-Strike: Condition Zero and the first screenshot of it was released in December 2001 at the same time as many other Asian themed maps were revealed.[5]

Perhaps due to its somewhat incomplete state, Ritual Entertainment presumably decided to scrap the map when they took over development of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero. Thus the map was not included in the final release of the game.

Trivia

  • The map's name, Otaku, is a Japanese term for people with obsessive interests.
