The Wearables are an unreleased cosmetic feature added in February 17, 2016 update (Operation Wildfire) to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive's game files[1].


The first mention was added along with CS: GO Store in Arms Deal Update in August 14, 2013.

Categories of store includes text reference to new kind of items can worn by teams.

Later was added more text references strings in the February 17, 2016 update to csgo_english file, strings describes faction ever similar to "CHOOSE A CLASS" window from older games,but descriptions of factions remain altered.

Also text includes description of a never released terrorist fraction, Freedom Fighters.

Later in the May 31, 2016 Update to reveal more information about wearables, player can customize own appearance in-game by replacing head model, hat, player model, eye wears, face mask, hands, lower body and torso.

Also includes console errors referring as "character paint kit", moreover files revealed location where textures be stored in future (materials/models/player/custom_player/paintkits/.vmt)

Failed to initialize character paint kit index %int: '%short'. VMT is missing or invalid: %short
Item definition %int "%short" used in both wearable and not wearable slots!
Item definition %short: Unable to find equip region mask for region named "%short"
Item '%short' is referencing an invalid clothing paint kit: '%short'.

In the August 18, 2016 update, all text references mentioning wearables was removed from csgo_english.txt.

The last, evidence is found models of the SEAL Team 6's Vest and Helmet, additionally files includes model equipment-less SEAL Team 6 model called "Base".

Moreover some models in folder "player" have prefix _custom,but all prefixed models is empty.

On the November 28, 2016 update,cosmetics gloves is released as special rare item.

On the January 12, 2017 update, was added to game file "clothing paint kits" string.[2].

On the May 23, 2017 update, was added numerous models: pedestal_badges_panorama.mdl, pedestal_character_temp_panorama.mdl and pedestal_default_temp_panorama.mdl.All these files suggesting that devs working to move to new Panorama UI,but also probably introduce player character customization in future updates. All models mentioned are empty.

Console Commands

The May 31, 2016 update added ConVar documentation in the game files. The commands themselves are still unusable. Possible leftover of developer testing.

  • econ_random_cosmetics
    • Randomizes cosmetics for testing (clientside only).
